Mama Pizza started on Gili Air before opening a second branch in Kuta, Lombok, and the island original is still the busier of the two. The dough is a sourdough left to prove for around 48 hours, then baked in a brick, wood-fired oven to a light, blistered crust and topped with Italian ingredients.
Pizza is the main event, from a straightforward margherita to burrata and spicy specials, but the menu also runs to handmade pasta such as tagliatelle with ragù, bruschetta and a home-made tiramisu. There is a short, fairly priced wine list and a cocktail menu.
Tables sit on the sand facing the water, so it is a good spot for a late lunch or sunset dinner after a day of snorkelling. It does not take bookings and is very popular, so arrive early or add your name to the waiting list when you get there.
