Al Forno opened on East Coast Road in 1995, making it one of the older Italian restaurants in Singapore, and it says it was the first here to import tomatoes and cheeses directly from Italy. It is run by owner Alessandro Di Prisco, and the room has a rustic, family-restaurant feel built around the wood-burning pizza oven.
Pizzas come out of that oven with a soft, foldable crust; the Pizza Rollo, rolled with ricotta, spinach and ham, is a house oddity worth trying. On the pasta side, order the Spaghetti al Cartoccio, seafood baked in foil for two, the lobster linguine with capers and olives, or the crab farfalle. Fried calamari, clams in white wine and tiramisu are regular picks.
Suited to families and groups in Katong and Marine Parade who want a dependable neighbourhood Italian. Lunch runs daily until 2pm; dinner starts at 5:30pm from Friday to Sunday. Delivery is available in the evenings.
