Buko Nero has been on Tanjong Pagar Road since 2000. It is a small shophouse dining room with about 20 seats, run by husband and wife Oscar and Tracy Pasinato. Oscar, who is from Veneto, cooks, and Tracy runs the room. Many regulars have been coming for years, and tables can be hard to get at short notice.
The dish everyone orders is the tau kwa tower: pan-fried Singaporean bean curd stacked with Italian-style greens in a tangy dressing. After that, have the homemade tagliatelle with ragù, spaghetti with blue prawn and spanner crab, or the risotto with three tomatoes. Mains include sea bream, halibut and Iberico pork, and Tracy's 'My Grandmother's Cake' is the dessert to finish with. Weekly specials change with the market.
It suits couples and small groups who want a quiet, personal dinner rather than a scene. Lunch is served Thursday to Saturday only, dinner Tuesday to Saturday, and it is closed on Sunday and Monday. Book ahead through OpenTable or by phone.
